Amethyst is the most road ready rock band in St. Louis
Picture
Three teenagers with a ‘don’t give a fuck’ attitude is pretty par for the course as far a rock bands are concerned, and in many ways, St Louis rockers, Amethyst stay true to status-quo.
The difference with bands like Amethyst and perhaps Nirvana, or the White Stripes is the thoughtfulness, intelligence and attention to detail. In a world and an industry where intelligence is absolutely vital and success is not attainable without it, Amethyst thrives.

Simply put, Amethyst is exciting to listen to, they’re edgy, they’re sexy, they’re anxious, they feel like a high school football game...they feel like trying not to get caught having sex in the backseat of your first car.

As perhaps juvenile as this all may sound, I believe it’s quite a mature stance for a group of high schoolers. So often it seems that those angsty feelings aren’t realized until years later-if at all. For an 18 year old to understand the weird time and anxiousness of the moment, is quite an introspective feat.

...Lead singer and drummer, Logan Cozart, has the looks and charm of a young Travolta. It’s quite rare to see a drummer as the lead singer, but this band is almost more worth watching for the slight variance they bring to the traditional three-piece rock band.

For all that Cozart is, his most prophetic attribute is his absolute command behind the kit. Whereas some drummers look like they’re trying to beat the drums to death, Logan appears to flow in and out of the instrument with suave and charisma, seemingly sweet talking the instrument into making noise for him.

Bassist Everett Remstedt and guitarist Vic McClintock both carry themselves like frontmen on stage and off. Musically, like Logan, they posses the skills that take years to learn as well as the skills that you just have to be lucky enough to be born with. Everett carries himself like a man that would look the devil in the eye and spit on his shoes; and as dangerous as that bravado can be to a young man, it’s the kind of attitude that allows one to be truly great at something.

Even as Amethyst plays through an upbeat song, Vic McClintock seems to pull notes from his soul and his core as an artist rather than his instrument. Like some of the best, his guitar is just the best vehicle to say the words that need to be said.

Amethyst has all the components of any rock band in history that made it to the big time. The chances are slim and the obstacles of course are many, but they’re as good as anyone at what they do.

Until next time,
